Xiao

background.

The world is full of flutes. Most cultures seem to have one or more; it is in fact the earliest known instrument in the archaeological record. There is something deeply appealing to me about the sound of air as it is set to vibrating by wood, bamboo, metal, and bone flutes.

The xiao in particular has an incredible versatility to play almost all kinds of music, while retaining its primeval resonance and deep connection to the past.

Sessions

I play xiao in recording sessions for albums, games, movie and television soundtracks. I also actively compose and arrange music for the instrument.

Recent sessions include the game Towers of Aghasba for Ps4.

I will be happy to play to xiao for your project and help bring your score to life. In addition to traditional sounds and techniques, I can play in most keys and modes with non-standard techniques and tone colors, and with an expanded palette of sounds.

I can read music or play by ear from a reference track.

All recordings are studio quality with optimal mic placement, ready to drop into your project timeline.

Ancient Sounds

The xiao is, in my opinion, the essential flute. It creates a universal woodwind sound and can evoke many moods, from contemplative to howling, gentle to driving. Numerous sizes of xiao create the potential to not only play in virtually any key, but also chromatically thanks to the ingenious fingering system. It is an ancient voice to sing new music.

Check out what the xiao can do:

As your xiao instructor, I will teach you how to have good posture, breath control, and a command of numerous scales and modes in all available octaves on your flute. You will learn what makes a good melody, how to shape your tone, and how to compose melodies that bring your flute to life. Together, we will learn music from all over the world.

Lessons are available at my studio in Longmont, CO, or online via Zoom. Contact me to set up an appointment.

Whatever your instrument, I will specifically tailor a lessons program to meet your individual needs. I will make sure that you engage with the music you love and start making music right away - not just practicing. Every bit of theory, history, or technique you learn will be related to the music you are studying, much of which you will choose. We will move at a speed suitable to your life, without pressure. All styles of learning and all ages are welcome.

Ellis Flute Workshop

My favorite xiao flutes are built by one of the only xiao makers in America, Geoffrey Ellis. His flutes are outstanding on every level, from intonation to tone to aesthetics, and their responsiveness unlocks many musical possibilities. He is a deeply knowledgeable craftsman and all around great guy.

If you are interested in the craft of flute making, I interviewed Geoffrey for the Autumn Salon. Also, check out his website, full of not just xiao but many innovative designs.
