Hand Drums

I teach hand drums in my studio at the Arts HUB in Lafayette, CO, at Saint Stephens Church in Longmont, CO, and on Zoom.

To make music truly come alive, players must understand rhythm on a cellular level; they must understand how to stay in the groove as naturally as walking or riding a bike, whatever their main instrument may be.

Learning hand percussion is one of the best ways to cultivate this skill. Drums help you understand that rhythm is more than just a beat, or a repeating pattern, or an interesting idea - it is the vital electricity which moves and unifies the music, and as such requires us to attune our motor systems to be responsive to its every motion.

I teach hand percussion in a general, world style, which encompasses rhythms and techniques from many cultures. Together we can learn frame drums of all varieties, djembes, African drums and more. We will discover the groove in the music you wish to play by identifying and mastering the underlying beat structures. We will develop strong and relaxed techniques which will bring the various sounds of the drum to life. You will have the opportunity to play with others and develop your musical communication skills.

As a student, you will have the opportunity to play for a live audience at recitals, held at the Arts Hub.

All Lessons are also available online via Zoom. Contact me to set up an appointment.
